Welcome To
Blouberg Family Practice

Blouberg Family Practice provides a unique offering of affordable specialist care for your entire family. Our practice is headed by a specialist Family Physician who offers a diverse spectrum of services ranging from Chronic disease management, Paediatric care, Women’s health services, Mental health care and Palliative care.

The practice is headed by Dr. Sheena Mathew, a Family medicine specialist, with over 15 years of medical experience working in South African and the UK health sector. She completed her 4-year Family Medicine speciality at the University of Stellenbosch and her medical degree at the University of Witwatersrand.

Our Family Physician’s patient-centered care is a revival of traditional medicine and its core values, where your family doctor shares an intimate relationship with you and your family.

The patient-physician relationship is an intricate aspect of the Family Physician’s practice and providing continuity of care is key to the development of this special relationship. The Family Physician’s comprehensive consultation with a patient seeks to understand the patient’s experience of the illness and how this impacts on their lives.

What is the difference between a Family Physician and a General Practitioner?

There is often a misconception that a Family Physician is a General Practitioner. Medical students who graduate with an MBBCh and complete their 2-year internship and 1-year community service can practice as a General Practitioner.

A Family Physician after obtaining their medical degree joins the Family Medicine specialist postgraduate programme at a medical university.

Similar to how a Paediatrician undergoes a 4-year specialist training in Paediatrics and a Physician does 4- year specialist training in adult medicine, a Family physician does 4 years of specialist training in Family medicine.

The Family medicine programme entails training in the various specialties such as:

  • Anaesthetics
  • Paediatrics
  • Internal Medicine
  • Psychiatry
  • Surgery
  • Obstetrics and Gynaecology
  • Orthopaedics
  • Emergency Medicine
  • Palliative care

This unique training makes the Family Physician unrivalled in their ability to provide comprehensive care for the whole family, while still catering to individual patient needs.
